DOUBLE DOG DARE

by Jim Plunkett

Sittin' on the back porch, summer time,
Back in nineteen fifty three,
With lemonade and BB guns
Little cowboys, Bill and me.

Bill was quite the thinker.
He was older and wiser than me.
He understood higher math, like fractions,
And he had won the spellin, bee.

Now it seemed Bill had a theory.
One he wasn't quite willin' to try.
Carefully he explained it to me
For he was older and wiser than I.

"A BB gun is an air rifle.
It works on air," he said.
I knew Bill understood these things.
So in agreement I nodded my head.

"If a fella' was to put his finger
Over the barrel and hold real tight
And pull the trigger, notthin' would happen,
'Cause the air couldn't come out...Right?"

"Sounds like a pretty good theory,," I said.
He was right for all I knew.
Well go ahead and do it," Bill said.
I double dog dare you to!"

A double dog dare, the ultimate challenge!
Thoughts of doubt raced through my brain.
I closed my eyes as I pulled the trigger,
And in silence I took the pain.

I looked up at Bill with a grin on my face.
"It works." I said, "Give it a try."
He cocked his gun and he pulled the trigger.
Then tears filled both our eyes.

He shook his sore finger and danced around
Shouting "It didn't work for me!"
He showed me the blister on his finger tip.
I held out mine for him to see.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Bill asked as we cried.
"My finger is turning all blue!"
"After all it was your idea, Bill,
And I thought you oughta' try it too."
